Our Projects

HEALTH CARE PROGRAMS :

In association with the State Government through the block development office , PET has constructed low cost latrines (toilets) in rural villages. PET conducts diabetes screening, health camps, AIDS awareness, and health education programs. PET also provides training for village birth and delivery attendants (dais) as well as immunization campaigns for mothers and children. Herbal treatments for simple ailments using plants from the local environment and the promotion of kitchen gardens are part of PET's work.

WOMENS EMPOWERMENT:

PET organizes women in villages into self-help groups and facilitates awareness programs and leadership trainings to encourage women's participation in their development and livelihood. In each village leaders of self-help groups are involved in PET's projects. With the support of PET staff, women have developed savings practices and are given the tools to help themselves.

SKILL INITIATIVE TRAINING FOR TRIBAL WOMEN :

PET gives short-term training to women in tailoring, cover (bags) making, and proposed to train on the production of sanitary napkins . PET's staff link self-help group members to local banks and facilitate establishment of small production units for women entrepreneurs at the grassroots level.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR ADOLESCENT GIRLS :

PET provides medical laboratory technician training for rural adolescent girls for self employment. Now a days the field of medical lab technology is developing quickly with new methodologies and new equipment. Through PET more than 80 adolescent girls are trained in medical lab technology.

EDUCATION :

In previous years, PET ran three bridge schools for dropout children in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu education department. As a result nearly 200 dropout children from the project area were re enrolled in formal schools. Supplementary education centers have started in tribal villages where government schools are situated far from the village and are poorly maintained. Our volunteers work with the school children on a daily basis, providing them with free English education through a range of interactive activities in the villages as well as Chengam.

HIV PATIENTS:

PET provides care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS and supports their children's education.PET's international volunteers are also working with HIV patients, providing then with a support system and medical advice.

DENGUE FEVER AWARENESS AND MOSQUITO NET DISTRIBUTION:

Headed by Volunteer Kallene Ryan, PET provided Dengue awareness (symptoms, treatment and prevention) to tribal villages. We launched a fundraising campaign through Facebook (Paypal-Fundrazr)in which we raised over 1,400 USD to provide each family with one mosquito net. We also set up training programs among the women Self Help Groups to teach them how to construct mosquito nets on their own. This project is being followed up by PET workers to ensure the proper usage of the nets and to record any impact on the prevalence of Dengue.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS :

PET holds regular environmental awareness programs in the tribal villages and in the town of Chengam. These programs are attended by both adults and children and often involve collaboration with other NGOs in Southern India. We have a special environmental awareness education project for our international volunteers, in which they will visit the village schools and work with teaching the children the importance of environmental consciousness through planting small gardens and other fun activities.
